According to a November 2005 news release by the FDA, updated labeling was approved to warn patients and healthcare providers of the potential dangers of the Ortho Evra birth control patch. This particular product exposes a patient to higher levels of estrogen due to the manner in which it is delivered into the body. Because an oral contraceptive travels through the digestive system, some of the estrogen is eliminated and is not absorbed by the body. The Ortho Evra patch delivers estrogen and progestin hormones directly into the blood stream.

Generally speaking, estrogen exposure may increase the risk of blood clots in a patient. While the FDA has not released a statement directly linking Ortho Evra to blood clots, the warning label for this product specifically states that a woman using the Ortho Evra patch will be exposed to approximately 60% more estrogen in their blood than through a typical birth control pill. This increased exposure may be considered to place a woman at greater risk of blood clots.
